I am not inherently opposed to traveling PT positions, but this ad from Delta Flex Travelers in the March 17 issue of Today in PT has to go down as one of the worst ever.
The implication is that the photo of the fat guy with the tatoo and a bad sun burn standing in the water is a PT (tough to visualize on this B&W scan but trust me on the fat, tatoo, and sunburn), not exactly the image I would be trying to convey if this were my recruiting company. Is this really the perception of a PT? I guess we can only hope they had a PTA in mind with the image (just kidding)!

APTA has pulled a coup I previously would not think could have happened...we recruited away the VP of the American Chiropractic Association (the best marketers in the health care business hands down), Felicity Clancy, to be the new Vice President of Communications at APTA!
Here is the announcement from APTA:
"I am pleased to announce that we have hired Felicity Feather as the new Vice President, Communications. Felicity starts at APTA on Monday, April 7. Felicity is currently the Vice President of Communications and Marketing at the American Chiropractic Association. She has held that position since 2001 and has been with the ACA since 1990. Before that Felicity worked for Express Newspapers in Gaithersburg, MD and at WJAC-TV News in Johnstown, PA. Felicity is a graduate of Indiana University of Pennsylvania where she earned a BA in Journalism. She also holds a Master of Public Administration from George Mason University. She is a member of the American Society of Association Executives and the Society of National Association Publications. She is also a member of the Metropolitan Chorus in Arlington, VA. Felicity resides with her husband and two daughters in Falls Church, Virginia."
Ok Felicity, first to air some years of pent up frustration at your success...it's hard seeing your name in all those chiro PR pieces, some of them directed against me!!!...but now that you have seen the light and left the dark side, we will quickly forgive you. In all seriousness, I appluad the effectiveness with which you did your job for 18 years...hands down outstanding work for the client you represented (while we unfortunately played dead most of the time). Felicity, if you can market chiropractic as legit, I assure you that you haven't seen anything yet when it comes to the untapped potential of pulling physical therapists out of the payer and consumer black hole into the limelight as experts in the non-surgical management of patients with musculoskeletal conditions.
I will keep being a cautious optimist until we see results, but I am starting to be a John Barnes fan more and more everyday. The EIM Team applauds the outstanding work from the Board of Directors, APTA staff, and anyone else involved in her recruitment.
Felicity, I know your last name is Clancy now, but you will always be Feather to us (please apologize in advance to your husband for the slight)...Felicity Feather just has a ring to it! Welcome to the best (and most misunderstood) health care profession on Earth!

Evidence in Motion and MyPhysicalTherapySpace would like to take a brief moment to acknowledge our partner PTJobs.com (see the job listings on the right side of our web pages) for taking the necessary steps to insure that their job listings do not include ads from clients who operate in referral for profit (RFP) arrangements. A policy that goes into effect next week makes it very clear that PTJobs.com does not accept job listings for positions in a practice if any physician has a financial interest in the practice and refers patients to an employed physical therapist or to a physical therapist who supervises an employed physical therapist assistant due to fundamental conflict of interest.
To be clear, we did not have to twist their arm for them to move in this direction. The policy has always been consistent with their company’s mission and values, and they are themselves actively involved in and support physical therapist owned practices. The issue was figuring out how to drill down to ownership interests during the registration process. They settled on a process by which potential clients would have to make the following certification during the resgistration process:
“I certify that no referral source (including any referring physician) has a financial interest in the practice that has the position that is the subject of this advertisement.”
Clients further acknowledge that their ad is subject to removal at anytime if it becomes clear that the client's status has changed or the certification was falsely made. Kudos to PTJobs.com for taking a strong position against RFP. If you're seeking to hire a physical therapist or are looking for an opportunity yourself, be comfortable knowing that when you post your ad or resume with PT Jobs, you're supporting a company whose interests are aligned with yours. Let them know you appreciate their stance by doing business with them!
Now if we could only get every PT educational program in the country to adopt a similar policy when it comes to setting up clinical education sites for their students. We should be able to go to a website and see very clearly which educational programs have adopted such a policy and those who have not. Please let us know if such a list has been circulated or already posted. Otherwise, we will consider posting such a list here, one that can be updated in real time if a program adopts such a 'no RFP' policy. We need transparency in this area. I'm afraid that many programs routinely collaborate with practices that do not serve the best interests of the very professionals the educational programs are supposed to be training.

Evidence in Motion has launched a job listing service for open faculty positions in physical therapist educational programs. The program's logo and announcement will rotate in a premiere location on the blog and website, reaching ~4000 subscribers daily!
