Clinical Consult

I have a friend of mine who had a very weird accident that resulted in a coma for about 3 weeks. She had a cardiac arrest while running a mini-marathon. The major sequelae was anoxic brain injury, coma for about 3 weeks, then another 2-3 weeks in the hospital. She has been inpatient rehab for 2 months now. She is able to ambulate and her strength is improving but still with balance problems and short term memory deficits. She has apparently exhausted traditional rehab, with her current options being outpatient rehab or a specific TBI/neuro setting. She still requires constant care and will need to be accompanied to outpatient rehab, thus the home/outpatient option is less desirable at this point. They are thinking about sending her for additional long term rehab (http://www.neuroskills.com/). Apparently this type of rehab is not done in KY.  There is apparently a location in Texas.  Any input?

Thanks,
Larry

Larry:

Magee Rehab in Philadelphia has an extensive rehabilitation facility. I don't know if it provides long-term care though.

There is also a facility in Englewood, CO (subburb of Denver) which sees patients with brain and spinal cord injury in a LTC environment; Criag Hospital. Great facility- I did an internship out there.
