Race for Scientific Ownership of Manipulation

I just want to follow up on my posting “Scientific Race for Ownership of Manipulation” from this weekend. I couldn’t have imagined that posting the rat manip slide would have produced such a terrific dialogue. I have enjoyed following the discussion and the emphasis that has been placed on the need for clinical research that will change the way I treat the patient who enters my clinic tomorrow. In summation I have attached the article that received this year’s first place award by the Conference on Chiropractic Research for the best article. I have also attached the article that received the award for the best research study this year from the Orthopaedic Section of the American Physical Therapy Association. As many of you know (and those who don’t wont be surprised) Dr John Childs and colleagues will be receiving this years Rose Award for the study titled “A Clinical Prediction Rule to Identify Patient’s with Low Back Pain Likely to Benefit from Spinal Manipulation: A Validation Study”. Take a look at both of these articles and decide for yourself where we as a profession need to be focusing our research efforts at this moment. Then think of yourself as a patient and which study would matter most to you as you enter the physical therapy clinic tomorrow with low back pain. I have also attached the “summary for patients” on the Childs study to better illustrate this position.
