EIM's Orthopedic Manual Physical Therapy Fellowship Awarded Status as an APTA Credentialed Program! Evidence in Motion’s Orthopedic Manual Physical Therapy Fellowship Program is now credentialed by the American Physical Therapy Association as a post-professional clinical fellowship program. We are very excited to share this new, and we are thankful for the contributions made by so many talented, skilled, and hard-working professionals who helped to make this happen.

This is another important step for EIM in our work and mission to elevate the physical therapy profession and the role of physical therapists in health care delivery. In our residency and fellowship training programs, we seek to partner with and equip individual practitioners and physical therapy practices with premiere resources and training necessary for becoming leaders in evidence-based practice while creating and promoting a culture of evidence-based practice within the physical therapy profession. Our fellowship program, in particular, is structured not only to create highly skilled evidence based manual physical therapists, but also to mold and develop our fellows into leaders in our profession.

At EIM, we believe that post-professional residency and fellowship training for physical therapists is the most effective and efficient way to accomplish and realize the goals stated in APTA's Vision 2020 and we are committed to the task. We also believe our programs are unique in the ability to make accessible and provide post-professional residency and fellowship training to large numbers of physical therapists, including relatively new graduates, who otherwise would not be able to take advantage of this important aspect of professional development which is critical to the future of our profession.

Our programs are centered around an advanced distributed distance learning model that utilizes the BlackBoard Learning Management System for didactic instruction, group projects, and Virtual Grand Rounds. For the clinical mentoring component of our residency programs, we partner with high quality Network Partner practices across the nation that support and facilitate locally the clinical mentoring process for residents who are affiliated with or assigned to those Network Partner practices. For our fellowship program, we partner with Fellows of the AAOMPT who are eager to work together to move evidence based practice and the profession forward. The end result is that PTs who are motivated to go through post-professional education and training, but don't want to or are unable to move from their current location or place of employment, now have the opportunity to participate in a world-class post-professional residency or fellowship training program.

Here is a quote from one of our first Fellows-In-Training regarding the impact of fellowship training on his professional performance:

"When trying to figure out what I wanted to do next in reference to my professional development, I knew I wanted to do something that would alter the way I practice and change me as a clinician.  I knew after completing my DPT and becoming board certified in orthopedics that fellowship training was the next step.  I researched every fellowship listed on AAOMPT's website.  EIM was not listed as they hadn't been credentialed yet.  However, my company mentioned EIM to me and, after comparing what EIM had to offer as opposed to other programs, I was sold.  The faculty is well recognized in their research work, they are progressive, and they are change agents.  These are things I to aspire to be. 

In the last 9 months, I've become a more skilled clinician, much better at clinical reasoning, a more confident PT, and have created relationships with professionals who are always looking to better the profession and themselves, never being satisfied.

About Dr. Timothy Flynn, PT, PhD   Dr. Flynn is board certified in Orthopaedic Physical Therapy, a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapists, and a frequent research presenter at state, national, and international meetings.   Dr. Flynn is widely published including 5 book chapters, over 35 peer-reviewed manuscripts, and nearly 40 published abstracts on orthopaedics, biomechanics, and manual therapy issues. He was the editor and author of the Butterworth-Heinemann textbook The Thoracic Spine and Ribcage- Musculoskeletal Evaluation & Treatment and author of 3 educational CD-ROMs on Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapy.  Dr. Flynn also co-authored the Manipulation Education Manual (MEM) jointly developed by the APTA and AAOMPT for use in professional physical therapist programs.   Dr. Flynn has received research grants from the Department of Defense, Foundation for Physical Therapy and the Texas Physical Therapy Education and Research Foundation. He served as the senior Army Medical Department consultant for the Department of Defense & Veterans Administration Clinical Practice Guideline Workgroup on low back pain and sciatica in primary care.  Dr. Flynn continues to maintain an active research agenda in the areas of spinal and extremity manipulation, low back disorders, characterization of spinal instability, and the development of clinical prediction rules.   Dr. Flynn's awards include the James A. Gould Excellence in Teaching Orthopaedic Physical Therapy, the Steven J. Rose Excellence in Research, the AAOMPT Outstanding Research Award (twice), and the Distinguished Alumnus- Marquette University Program in Physical Therapy. He is the past chair of the AAOMPT research committee and the ATPA Orthopaedic Section nominating committee.   Dr. Flynn is an expert clinician, he is owner of Colorado Physical Therapy Specialists which focuses on providing the "Best Care in Colorado."  He founded Manipulations, Inc. a company dedicated to providing evidence-based educational products and services to practitioners and educational institutions involved in musculoskeletal patient care and serves on the Board of Directors of Evidence in Motion.   Dr. Flynn is currently President of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapists and an Associate Editor for the Journal of Orthopaedic & Sports Physical Therapy. He is an Associate Professor and Manual Therapy Fellowship Coordinator, Department of Physical Therapy, Regis University where he teaches professional and post-professional students in the area of musculoskeletal management and evidence based practice.   Dr. Joshua Cleland & Dr. Julie Whitman     Dr. Joshua Cleland, PT, PhD Dr. Cleland earned a Master of Physical Therapy Degree from Notre Dame College in 2000 and the Doctor of Physical Therapy Degree from Creighton University in 2001. In February of 2006, he received a PhD from Nova Southeastern University. He received board certification from the American Physical Therapy Association as an Orthopaedic Clinical Specialist in 2002 and recently completed a fellowship in manual therapy through Regis University in Denver, CO. Josh is presently an Assistant Professor in the Physical Therapy Program at Franklin Pierce College. He practices clinically in outpatient orthopaedics and is the Research Coordinator at Rehabilitation Services of Concord Hospital, Concord, NH. He is actively involved in numerous clinical research studies investigating the effectiveness of manual physical therapy in the management of spine and extremities disorders. He has published over 25 manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals including Spine, Physical Therapy, the Journal of Orthopaedic and Sports Physical Therapy and Manual Therapy. In 2004 he was awarded the Excellence in Research Award from the American Academy of Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapists. He is an Editorial Review Board Member for the Journal of Orthopaedic and Sports Physical Therapy and an Associate Editor for the Journal of Manual and Manipulative Therapy. He has recently authored a textbook titled "Orthopaedic Clinical Examination: An Evidence Based Approach for Physical Therapists" which was published in the fall of 2005. Dr. Julie Whitman, PT, DSc Dr. Whitman is board certified in Orthopaedic Physical Therapy and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapists(AAOMPT). She is widely published, including 3 educational CD-ROMs on Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapy, over 20 peer-reviewed manuscripts, and over 30 published abstracts in the areas of orthopaedics and manual physical therapy.  Dr. Whitman has been either the primary author or co-author on research grants from the Foundation for Physical Therapy, the Orthopaedic Section of the APTA, and the AAOMPT, and is currently serving on the Steering Committee for Physical Therapy Journal.  She has presented research both nationally and internationally at professional conferences, and awards include: AAOMPT's Kaltenborn "Teach I Must" Award, Section on Geriatrics Excellence in Research Award, JOSPT George J.
